I love the new ArtBiogs: Surfaced app. Every time I'm in a gallery, I use it to discover so much more about an artist than what's printed on the gallery label.
Many highly active and successful art prize artists rarely appear in major public gallery collections - despite their success they've been shut out of the public exhibition spaces. Artbiogs: Surfaced helps curators, students, collectors, and art enthusiasts discover artists who might otherwise remain under the radar.
The name Surfaced comes from the idea that the Australian art prize landscape is a vast sea of information. Rather than trying to catalogue everything, the app “surfaces” artists who have been recorded as finalists in at least one Australian art prize during the past five years.
The ArtBiogs database currently contains more than 36,000 finalist records spanning the last decade and covering over 13,400 individual artists. Those numbers continue to grow as new prizes and exhibitions are added.
A typical artist profile includes links to the artist’s Instagram account, the number of prize exhibitions they have appeared in, prizes won, and a detailed history of finalist exhibitions.
