Pathways to Prizes in October 2026

October 2026

It was fifteen years ago today …

I started Art Prizes in response to a simple problem: there were no comprehensive listings for artists looking for calls for entry. Fast forward to now: Art Prizes is a profitable business with a practical weekly rhythm. Its core work is keeping listings current and running client campaigns across the website and social media. The site's statistics, analytics and monthly newsletters offer plenty of scope for someone who'd enjoy that side of the business, but they are optional. The heart of Art Prizes remains its listings and the campaigns it delivers for prize organisers.

Some of the prizes advertising today have been with us since the launch of our website.

Back to 2011: I thought I'd tackle the problem, so I designed and built the original website myself. The response was positive and, before long I could afford a programmer to help fix my mess and improve its functionality.

I also began visiting art prizes in person whenever I could. My travels took me from the Outback Art Prize in Winton, Central Queensland, to the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, now known as The Lester Prize, in Perth.

I still visit art prizes. Just a couple of weeks ago, I met the organiser of the Urunga Small Sculpture Prize at Urunga on the mid-north coast of NSW. There is no better way to understand what art prizes mean to their organisers, artists and communities.

What began as an idea to fill a need has become an established Australian arts platform. Now is the right moment for a new owner to take Art Prizes into the future!

We can reveal that 10 of Australia's top 15 art prize finalists were selected as finalists for the Omnia Art Prize in Melbourne. While the Omnia has a large exhibition of finalists (over 200 artists), this statistic is still significant. The top 15 finalists so far this year have collectively appeared in 109 finalist exhibitions. It's remarkable that the list doesn't include an Archibald or Mosman Art Prize finalist. This really surprises me.

ArtBiogs: Surfaced app
Find the artist. Follow the story

I love the new ArtBiogs: Surfaced app. Every time I'm in a gallery, I use it to discover so much more about an artist - significantly more than is printed on the gallery label (that's why I built it).

ArtBiogs: Surfaced helps curators, students, educators, collectors and art enthusiasts discover artists who might otherwise remain under the radar. Many highly active and successful art prize artists rarely feature in major public gallery collections and exhibition spaces.

The name Surfaced comes from the idea that the Australian art prize landscape is a vast sea of artists and information. Rather than trying to catalogue everything, the app “surfaces” artists who have been recorded as finalists in at least one Australian art prize since 2020.

The database currently contains more than 40,000 finalist records spanning the last decade and covering over 14,400 individual artists. Those numbers continue to grow as new prizes and exhibitions are added.

A typical artist profile includes links to the artist’s Instagram account, the number of prize exhibitions they have appeared in, prizes won, a detailed history of finalist exhibitions, and brief biographical details if available.
