Art Prizes calling in September 2025

September 2025

It's the quiet time for art prize calls right now as you can see by the smaller number of sponsored calls listing. The number of prizes calling at this time of the year is a third of that in the first half of the year. And this year, it was particularly busy for me even though I was travelling overseas for that period. The life of a digital nomad feels more attractive now i see how easy it can be.

Anyway, with this quiet spell, I've taken this opportunity to work on new features for our website made possible by using AI for programming. Side Note: AI programing is cheaper and you have total control but it is far from perfect.

Now, back to the thread - we may or may not use all of the new features in production that we are evaluating in the PoC (Proof of Concept) - it will depend on a few things, but most of all your response to these additional features will make the biggest difference.

For the past month I've been working on integrating all the information we collect on art prizes into a new site. This site can give you a better view of prizes calling, finalists and winners announced and some unique insights into the pool of finalists who are shared by multiple prizes. We may or may not use all of them in production - it will depend on a few things, but most of all your response to these additional features will make the biggest difference.

This sharing of finalists is not a bad thing - it just reflects the fact that there is a pool of artists who either because they actively enter more prizes than others or because their work appeals to judges on a more consistent basis, are then selected for more finalist exhibitions.

Here is the front screen, showing prizes calling in September.

Some limitations - it may be unavailable if I am working on an update, it isn't complete (i.e login, exports, chats).

Recently announced Winners

  • Congratulations to these recently announced winners.

In the PoC you can create a visualisation of shared finalists in 2025 prizes - just select the Menu and then Shared Finalists Visualisation. Great if you are into more details. You can see the menu as it currently stands today. I'll try and add media and prize value as additional selection properties.

Select the "Shared Finalists Visualisation" to display the most recent update of finalists in a node graph view. It is definitely worth knowing that you can zoom in/out, move the nodes or horizontally and move the entire display if you want to spread it out. We'll keep working on this to make it better, but it does work.

BTW: you can select or deselect any of the properties - but to move nodes horizontally change the Layout from Horizontal to Organic.

Noteable Finalist Exhibitions atm

A couple of notable finalist exhibitions include the WFF's show including work from past winners and finalists:

And the Deakin Contemporary Small Sculpture Award finalists exhibition

Leading Art Prize Finalists - 1st July 2025

Our table of high-performing finalists is not a competition in itself - more an interesting view of artists who have been popular with the judges in 2025.

As of 08 September there are now 6 artists who have found favour with the judges on at least 7 occasions this year, led by Lori Pensini who has been invited at least 10 times:

To stay in touch with calls, or just look up details about an art prize, the Art Prizes iOS app is available from the Apple store for $14.99 - a one-time fee. It shows prizes calling, metrics on prize winners and finalists, and a notification panel showing you which prizes have just started calling or are closing soon.

Shared finalists across prizes in 2025 You may have read about a new prize called the Banksia Prize which, according to the Founders' Letter, is in response to bias in the judging of the bigger Australian art prizes. The Banksia Prize offers all artists an equal chance to be recognised. In most of our nation's top art prizes, judges are aware of who created each work, allowing...

October 2025 What a brilliant GIVEAWAY for one of our lucky followers - ONE free entry to the John Villiers Outback Art Prize. Can you support these important regional Australian art prizes and the communities that rely on them? It's a prize held in Winton, Central Queensland, a beautiful part of regional Australia - where daily life is the complete opposite of city life. I went there in 2023 and found it to be amazing. Alongside the community's strong support for the visual arts, Winton also...
